Girding Your Loins with Truth
By Shawn Tomlin
My next six blog articles are going to be a series over Ephesians 6:13-17. Each article will focus on an individual piece of the full armor of God. So let’s ask the first question, what is armor used for? Protection in battle. The armor of God is also used for protection, but as Paul puts it in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.” Will a suit of armor or a bullet proof vest save you from what Paul is speaking about in Ephesians 6:12? No, it won’t. As believers, we need the full armor of God.
The first piece of armor that I’m going to write about is found in Ephesians 6:14, “Having girded your loins with truth…” Go ahead, laugh, I did. Now men who were getting ready for battle or hard labor would gird their loins, but what does that even mean? Well, the tunics worn by men back in that time were long, like a long skirt. So to gird their loins they would grab the bottom of the tunic, and pull it up around their thighs and between their legs. The reason for this was to keep that long tunic out of the way so it wouldn’t slow the men down. That’s why the expression “gird your loins” means to be ready.
In faith let us hold fast to this truth.
What Paul is saying here is to be ready for battle knowing the truth. In order to battle the world, sin, the devil, we have to first and foremost have to have a good, foundational understanding of the truth. Without it we will surely be slowed down, be at a disadvantage, and stumble and fall. Ok, so what truth is Paul wanting us to be ready with?
Jesus Christ testifies to the truth which we are to be ready with in John 8:12. “Then Jesus again spoke to them saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” The truth is that Christ is the only way to the Father. Only through Christ’s righteous life lived on our behalf, His atoning death in which He took the punishment that we deserved, and in His resurrection we become partakers in the eternal life that He bestows on all who believe in Him.
In faith let us hold fast to this truth. Every single day we get out of bed and walk out our front door into the world. We battle every single day against temptation and sin. They attack and we must stand ready. We must gird our loins with truth. Not just any truth, but the real Truth, Jesus Christ. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. None will come to the Father except through Him.
“The LORD bless you, and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.”
